Activities
Elementary Basketball League
The Elementary Sports League was created in 2008. The league started with the simple idea of allowing students to play basketball in the gymnasium of Mount Pleasant Elementary School during recess as an incentive for doing well in school behaviorally and academically. It quickly turned into the only program of its kind in the Brandywine School District and possibly the State of Delaware. The goal of the program is to Have Fun and Build Community. The fun that we have had has been more then we could have ever asked for, imagined or anticipated! We have cheerleading squads and in the past even had pep bands! You name it the schools are doing it! We have been able to do all of this and keep it free because of the very generous volunteer base as well as the support of the school district that is very generous with the use of the facilities.
Odyssey of the Mind
The students of Mount Pleasant Elementary School embrace the Odyssey of the Mind program. Students enjoy the camaraderie of their teammates as they work together to solve challenging tasks.
What is Odyssey of the Mind? This video will give you a good idea of what it's about.
As many educators have noted, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiative in education is closely linked to creative problem solving. Students who participate in the Odyssey of the Mind creative problem solving program learn to think critically and creatively. Teams collaborate to identify and analyze a problem, and then brainstorm innovative ways to solve it. As teachers, we value improved STEM programs to guide students who are capable of new solutions and better decisions. Beyond teaching science and math content, we look for opportunities to provide our students with experiences centered on design, innovation, engineering, and technology in order to increase creativity, inventiveness, ingenuity, and imagination capabilities. The Odyssey of the Mind experience fosters these characteristics.

We look forward to the continued participation of last year’s team members, and welcome the diverse and unique talents of all interested students. For more information about Odyssey of the Mind, please click here or contact our school coordinator Maria Cobb.
